Why do Playground remove so many cars? Posted: 26 Aug 2021 06:50 PM PDT Why do PG cut so many vehicles from game to game? It's a good question. The community seems to go through this ride every time a new Forza comes out. We see the car reveals and scour the list to see if our favourite cars from games past are there (and if there is any new hotness too) Usually there is a lot of disappointment at lost vehicles from game to game. Seeing Ford and Merc's lists for FH5 has definitely soured people for sure. Firstly, I get the frustration with it. FH4 had a vast roster of 753 vehicles. FH3 had 520+, FM7 800+. It's easy to get attached to some of these obscure and awesome vehicles that often aren't in any other racing games. Seeing cars not make it in for FH5's launch sucks. I'm with you. I would love to see every single car from previous games make it in to the next game. But I expect we'll be losing a lot from FH4's Car list going into FH5. The SL65 Black Series is a big loss but there will be a lot more going. I think at least 120+ vehicles, depending on the final car count at launch for FH5. Definitely an issue. Now you're probably wondering, have T10/PG every talked about this issue? Well they have, a while back. Here's the link; https://forums.forzamotorsport.net/turn10_postsm485910_Cars-year-models-being--discontinued-in-the-forza-series.aspx#post_485910
A common misconception is that because PG has the license for "X Car Brand", they can include every single car from "X Car Brand" they want. Not the case. The manufacturer might be picky about a particular car (see SLR McLaren for an example of that) or perhaps it's out of budget for PG. I get that PG is owned by Microsoft and a lot of people will just assume "that surely MS just gives PG infinite licensing budget to acquire as much as possible". Again not the case. That is just bad business. The licensing team will have a budget and has to keep to that budget. So perhaps a car is missing because of the extra cost of that next vehicle from a manufacturer exceeds budget, or could be better spent elsewhere. This game will have more cars at launch than any other Horizon game, so that number is more than 460. Probably somewhere in the 500's. That will not be cheap. As JONK (T10/PG Dev) states, there is a resource cost to porting each vehicle to a new game. It isn't just CTRL C, CTRL V. Otherwise you would see every vehicle make it over that could. Whether it be Licensing. Time. Budget. There are constraints PG/T10 have to work with. I get why people think that every car can be ported in 1 second though. A lot of cars from FH3 ---> FH4 haven't ostensibly changed at all (in terms of new upgrades etc). Something like the Acura Integra Type-R for example. However, each vehicle has to pass QA. Each vehicle has to be tested so that it works and isn't broken (and we see what happens when that process isn't done properly, cough 599XX E cough). Then there's new upgrades (FH5 has 100's of new engine swaps, 100s of new rims) which will most likely affect every single car in the game. Again, all has to be tested etc. This all has to be weighed up against the cost of porting other vehicles from past Forza's or bringing in new vehicles to the game which take around 6 months to build from scratch, or porting 360 era models which take a while as well. There is an opportunity cost to every thing you do in game development and it's a tough pill to swallow but that's the hard truth that people (for understandable reasons) don't care too much for. There is also hope. We lost of lot of cars similarly from FH3 to FH4. Some of which we never got back (RIP Aston Martin V8 Vantage) but a lot of which we did eventually get into FH4. I expect a similar turn out for FH5. Perhaps we get 1 Free Car a week (alongside the Car Pass cars) for the foreseeable future in the festival playlist, maybe even more. We ended up getting 152 "Free" Cars in the festival playlist in FH4. That included a lot of new to forza cars yes, but a lot of cars missed from FH3. If we can get a similar showing for FH5 (maybe even better), there are opportunities for a huge car list even bigger than FH4's. To circle back to my original point, IMO it's not as if PG are just randomly cutting cars for absolutely no reason. They certainly aren't going to put those cars in as Paid DLC (Car Pass will most likely be all new-to-Forza cars + maybe some 360era ports). Most likely just Free additions through the Festival Playlist. Also porting cars from game to game for retail release isn't a 1 second job either. [link] [comments] | ||

I keep seeing Forza being called an "arcade" racer - is this accurate? Posted: 27 Aug 2021 05:40 AM PDT When I first got my Xbox 360 a hundred years ago, I got Forza 2 and Project Gotham Racing (4, I think it was?). The difference was obvious; Forza was difficult, realistic, and more immersive/intense. To me, this was the difference between an arcade racer and a racing sim. I've since played Forza III, VI, and VII, as well as GT5 & Sport. But now, I see lots of posts, videos, and articles talk about Forza as being an arcade racer. I always thought games like Forza and Gran Turismo were sims, and games like Need for Speed, Burnout, Mario Kart, etc. were arcade. Granted, the Forza Horizon series is a bit of a 'simcade,' but surely Forza Motorsport with assists off is about as sim as it gets, no? iRacing, for example, might be a more realistic sim, if not THE most intense/realistic sims, but I don't think that makes Forza Motorsport an arcade racer, does it? Or is it all just really a spectrum? (obligatory "who cares if you're having fun?" lol) [link] [comments] |
