I tested and rated all 26 D100 cars so that you don't have to!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:10 PM PST

As we all know Forza's Performance Index is a nearly perfect system, that has never misclassified a car. However it's one glaring flaw is the bottom limit score of 100 points. Are we to accept that all 26 of these magnificent machines perform exactly the same? Of course not! Thus I underwent the arduous task of lapping and ranking every D100 car, so that we can finally have a complete PI score for every car in the game.

    Method

Using a stock NA Miata, I tested a variety of circuits around the map. I decided on the Princes Street Gardens Circuit for it's balance of high and low speed cornering as well as straights. It's totally possible the results would be different on one of the few tighter tracks (such as the festival circuit), but since these cars are frankly too slow for most of Horizon's roads a slight bias towards power felt appropriate. I ran five laps in the Miata before each testing session to adjust myself to the track, and also ran once in the Jesko at the end for shits and gigs. ABS and the full racing line were on and I used rewind to correct personal errors (mostly in the Reliant), all other assists were off. Each car was given an out lap and one flying hot lap to set a time. From there the fastest car was set as P100, the slowest to P1, and all others proportionally in between.

    Results: Here!

    Discussion

And the winner is the Willys Jeep! I was fairly surprised by this result at first but after seeing its great power to weight ratio it became more explicable. Short gears were a big help for the little jeep, but also limited it on the back straight so its lead could potentially have been bigger!

    Some other notes:

    • Power to weight ratio was a good indicator of success, but wasn't everything

    • Every car that wasn't limited by gearing pretty much hit top speed on the back straight

    • The Karmann Ghia beat it's more powerful P/W ratio rivals in the corners, showing the track wasn't fully biased towards the straights. Also I love this car so I was excited to see it perform so well!

    • The Deluxe station wagon was both the only car with triple digit power and the only car to hit 80 mph, a successful combo in its final result

    • The Reliant's solid P/W ratio gave it a remarkably mediocre final result in spite of its awful dynamics

    • Short gears could help a car feel faster than it was, I was surprised to see how slow the TA midget was

    • The Isetta was the only other car limited by gearing, it was seriously hindered on the back straight

    • Predictably the Peel's finished last with the Trident slightly edging out the P50, but sharing the D1 rating. They were also so slow as to really drag down the distribution. Way to regress in the 40 years since the release of the Austin 7!

I hope you can all sleep better knowing definitively that a Hillman Imp is in fact faster than a Morris Minor 1000. Thanks for reading!

I doubt it’ll happen, especially right now, but it would be nice at some point to get the Ferrari 412 in Forza, the car from Daft Punk’s Electroma film

did you ever just ... cruise around

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 04:51 AM PST

have any of you ever just cruised around in a bone stock car with the in car view.

if you did, did any other players just tag along randomly.

last night i used my wheel, shifter and pedals, jumped in a stock ford XR2, tooting along with the in car view for about an hour ... then i used the stick on my joypad to look behind and there were ... 8 other players.

i stopped at every junction, used the correct lane when entering a roundabout and i never once thought to look behind.

it was weird, a little quiet jaunt around the map, reverse parking correctly into a parking space, stopping off at the pub for "snacks" then off we went.

its never happend to me before and it felt ... weird .. being the leader of the pack of slow sunday drivers.

oh and it was a real mixed bag of cars, vans and pickups ... also the volvo irontruck :D

eventually it turned into the slowest drag race when everyone got in the XR2.

have any of you ever had this happen ??
