A long critique about the future of the Horizon series Posted: 16 Apr 2020 10:17 AM PDT TL;DR: The Horizon series has already peaked with this formula, unless it undergoes some heavy changes, subsequent instalments will be short-lived. This is going to be a long post about what I feel is the future of Horizons. They have more potential than Motorsport (for sure a vaster player base) but they started to waste it, so my discussion will be about them and the 3 pillars that make for the game: Map, Cars, Races. I have about 560 hours on Horizon 4 (more than any game I played), most of them because it lasted 2 years and the devs have done a tremendous job in keeping it alive by adding cars and game modes. I honestly believe it is a really good game. The graphics is fantastic, both of the environment and the cars and I think I'm not speaking only for myself when I say that the best thing is that it finds was to keep all of us entertained in one way or another, even if we all like to do different things. Although I will devote more time to critics than praises, I have 560 hours played because this is a very good game and nothing changes that. It is not a great game though. Imho, H2 and H3 were more innovative and better in some ways. H2 had behind the power of the new gen consoles, so innovation was a must and it indeed arrived. Bigger and explorable map and huge leaps on the graphics. H3 managed to improve the cocktail: the map was fantastic and incredibly diverse (much more than H2): it had a (scaled down) metropolis, the desert, the forest and the beaches. All of them were breathtaking views. I don't remember exactly what game added what, but from H1 to H3 we witnessed a franchise that really matured. The ProblemsHorizon 4 did add 'dynamic weather' (which is more 4 different textures of the same map, rather than dynamic), but a part from winter, which, credit to the merit, is awesome, and possibly autumn, the rest of it, is normality. This whole dynamic weather probably shifted the efforts of the dev team, because the map is nowhere near as good as the one in H3:
The car list is where this games makes up for, for the majority of us. They had the sound problem, which hopefully will be fixed, but they also have a different problem: car's performance customizations is literally unchanged from Motorsport 4. You have, say, the transmission and you can modify it to:
And that's basically it for every part of the car. It does not matter if a car has a manual transmission or an F1 style gearbox. If a car is someway capped by devs you can't do anything. If the devs feel that you can turn a 60s cars into a beast with a manual gearbox that changes in milliseconds, you can do it. Car customization lacks realism. Their performance too is unrealistic, an 800+ horsepower 2019 Ferrari 812 is SLOWER than a 650 hp 2010 Noble M600 (In the real world, this is nowhere near the truth). I know it is an arcade game and not a simulator, but it feels to me that I'm driving in and against different bodykits and not different cars, which makes it no different than an Asphalt 9 for mobile. Let not mention that for 90% of the cars you have 1 spoiler and 1 front splitter and that's it. Races then are, without any doubt, the most boring thing in the game (not online ones). The best implementation of drivatars, for some reasons, is relegated to Trails. Offline racing is, in unbeatable start last and get whatever place you can, since they won't get a corner wrong anytime.
If the next Horizon is a different location, with a slightly bigger map size, better graphics and minor changes to this formula, it won't be enough. On Metacritic, H4 has a lower player score than H3 for this reason. Of course there will be improvements, but with no big step up in the game itself, it will be the start of the decline. ChangesMapI have nothing against a map in Japan, but it should have this 3 things:
Reviewers should write that in the new Horizon you simply can't get enough of exploring the map, given that a bigger map also gives place for more stunts to perform. It should also have a proper Airport (bigger than H3), more than one actual racetrack (and much bigger than the one in the Lego expansion) and cities that are actually different from each other. Houses were a good addition, but they should have a garage in which you can walk by and see your cars, otherwise they are just a start point once you fire up the game and a wasted opportunity Cars
Races
These are my thoughts, let me know what you think! Edit: I forgot, if you have to add roadsters, at least make us drive with the top up or down on demand [link] [comments] | ||
