A long critique about the future of the Horizon series

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 10:17 AM PDT

TL;DR: The Horizon series has already peaked with this formula, unless it undergoes some heavy changes, subsequent instalments will be short-lived.

This is going to be a long post about what I feel is the future of Horizons. They have more potential than Motorsport (for sure a vaster player base) but they started to waste it, so my discussion will be about them and the 3 pillars that make for the game: Map, Cars, Races.

I have about 560 hours on Horizon 4 (more than any game I played), most of them because it lasted 2 years and the devs have done a tremendous job in keeping it alive by adding cars and game modes. I honestly believe it is a really good game. The graphics is fantastic, both of the environment and the cars and I think I'm not speaking only for myself when I say that the best thing is that it finds was to keep all of us entertained in one way or another, even if we all like to do different things.

Although I will devote more time to critics than praises, I have 560 hours played because this is a very good game and nothing changes that. It is not a great game though. Imho, H2 and H3 were more innovative and better in some ways. H2 had behind the power of the new gen consoles, so innovation was a must and it indeed arrived. Bigger and explorable map and huge leaps on the graphics. H3 managed to improve the cocktail: the map was fantastic and incredibly diverse (much more than H2): it had a (scaled down) metropolis, the desert, the forest and the beaches. All of them were breathtaking views. I don't remember exactly what game added what, but from H1 to H3 we witnessed a franchise that really matured.

    The Problems

Horizon 4 did add 'dynamic weather' (which is more 4 different textures of the same map, rather than dynamic), but a part from winter, which, credit to the merit, is awesome, and possibly autumn, the rest of it, is normality. This whole dynamic weather probably shifted the efforts of the dev team, because the map is nowhere near as good as the one in H3:

    • A part from Edinburgh, the rest of it lacks creativity.
    • The villages around are the same reused textures and the roads seem purpose designed for races that last 50 seconds a lap.
    • The midlands are lifeless forest and both the coastline and the mountains are boring (the northern mountains have literally 1 non-off road to go up and down in the main map).
    • I'm not saying the setting is bad, but as far as exploring and cruising around it could and should have been more, there are also way too many straights.

The car list is where this games makes up for, for the majority of us. They had the sound problem, which hopefully will be fixed, but they also have a different problem: car's performance customizations is literally unchanged from Motorsport 4. You have, say, the transmission and you can modify it to:

    1. better transmission,
    2. sport transmission,
    3. race transmission.

And that's basically it for every part of the car. It does not matter if a car has a manual transmission or an F1 style gearbox. If a car is someway capped by devs you can't do anything. If the devs feel that you can turn a 60s cars into a beast with a manual gearbox that changes in milliseconds, you can do it. Car customization lacks realism. Their performance too is unrealistic, an 800+ horsepower 2019 Ferrari 812 is SLOWER than a 650 hp 2010 Noble M600 (In the real world, this is nowhere near the truth). I know it is an arcade game and not a simulator, but it feels to me that I'm driving in and against different bodykits and not different cars, which makes it no different than an Asphalt 9 for mobile. Let not mention that for 90% of the cars you have 1 spoiler and 1 front splitter and that's it.

Races then are, without any doubt, the most boring thing in the game (not online ones). The best implementation of drivatars, for some reasons, is relegated to Trails. Offline racing is, in unbeatable start last and get whatever place you can, since they won't get a corner wrong anytime.

    • Sprints require basically zero skill, you just choose the fastest straight line car with some degree of cornering and kamikaze yourself into the only 3 slow corners that there are. Guaranteed win.
    • Circuit races are the complete opposite, way too short to compete fairly against cornered focus 4 wheel drive cars if you use rwd cars.
    • Except for 2 circuits in Fortune Island, tracks last 1 minutes. Surely the blueprint made up a lot, but online races and championships are mostly based on the original designs.
    • Cross Country races are just randomly based on how lucky you are landing jumps and it feels like it is something that came out from Rocket League developers.

If the next Horizon is a different location, with a slightly bigger map size, better graphics and minor changes to this formula, it won't be enough. On Metacritic, H4 has a lower player score than H3 for this reason. Of course there will be improvements, but with no big step up in the game itself, it will be the start of the decline.

    Changes

    Map

I have nothing against a map in Japan, but it should have this 3 things:

    • Big, very big. Realistically, at least half the size of this one
    • Diverse environments, like H3 but more, multiple mountain technical roads and long straight roads, and a mixture of the two. Horizon should stop with straights that are not really straight enough to top your car's max speed but are a kilometre long anyway and have corners that are only challenging at speeds above 200kph
    • Incentives to explore the map and drive it. I would love to see car makers showrooms placed around the map, so if you want to buy a car, you drive to the GM's or Merc's showroom and then buy your corvette or your amg. Of course you can still use the festival Autoshow, but devs might want to discourage it by levying a tax on cars bought in the Autoshow instead of the dealers.

Reviewers should write that in the new Horizon you simply can't get enough of exploring the map, given that a bigger map also gives place for more stunts to perform. It should also have a proper Airport (bigger than H3), more than one actual racetrack (and much bigger than the one in the Lego expansion) and cities that are actually different from each other. Houses were a good addition, but they should have a garage in which you can walk by and see your cars, otherwise they are just a start point once you fire up the game and a wasted opportunity

    Cars

    • Customization that fits the car category. Citycars should have different upgrade categories than muscle cars and even different than hypercars.
    • Also, how hard can it be to design different variations of spoiler with different properties? Wings that look like the huracan performante or the challenger daytona ones? The same goes for front and lateral splitters, hoods and others. H5 should take a look from the last NFS.
    • They also should have more realistic 'packages': once you buy the car at the dealership, you can chose interior colours, different maker rims and, say, if you buy a Lexus LFA, things like the Nurburgring Package or the Nismo Package for GT-Rs.
    • The car list does not need to get substantially any bigger than this, but each car should be unique in its own way.
    • Tyres should also change name based on their tread compound.
    • Overall I would like to modify more things, hell sometimes I would like to limit a car's max power or torque. It would even be awesome if cars are fitted with real life electronic limitators (like M5's ones) that you lift off afterwards, if you want.
    • There should be more everyday cars and less rocket spaceships, not that I'm against Ferraris or Lamborghinis, I love them, but there was no need for 3 different Ageras and 2 different CCs and basically every McLaren ever made. FM4 (by far the best game) had a Nissan Leaf and was more balanced, for each M3 you had the RS 4 and the C-class of the same era. Now there's every single generation of M3s + variations (7 or 8 M3s) and just 2 C-classes. The same goes for Ford and its competitors

    Races

    • I would like to see a rival that has a name, rather than EpIcPLayER2oo2, but that's maybe just me.
    • Give us back championships not tied to weekly events and if you don't want to add qualifications, at least reverse grid starting. Why should I always start last while the second one in the championship starts first or forth?
    • I would also love to have stock car competition. You race the car you buy and that's it.
    • I would replace time exclusive cars with event locked cars. In the case the franchise keeps adding cars like this (which is great, absolutely fantastic), so if it was to add the new AM Valkyrie, it can create a new championship event which is longer (like 5 races), but is always available. I have nothing against grinding for cars, it stimulates me, but they should not be locked behind wheelspins or timed event. Not everyone has the time to play as much as this games requires to unlock time exclusive cars.
    • Circuits should be longer and more like real life circuits, sprints on the other hand have the right length, but should have a lower average speed
    • Online racing should have a voting system and more B/C races, less S2

These are my thoughts, let me know what you think!

Edit: I forgot, if you have to add roadsters, at least make us drive with the top up or down on demand
