Why does having less players in team racing have such an insane advantage? It's near impossible to win a 6v2 because being in 1st and 2nd place is worth less points than having 1 player in the smaller team being 3rd and 4th?

In what team activity in all of existence apart from forza racing does having a smaller team have an advantage? What is the logic behind having the best strat for winning to have most of your team giving up?
