Posted: 24 Dec 2019 03:38 AM PST I live in Edinburgh but spend most of my time away for work out of the country. I have my xbox away with me and play forza regularly. Felt really weird when I came home for Christmas and was driving the streets of Edinburgh in my sensible car along streets I have been driving recently in the game behind the wheel of supercars. Particularly as my street is in the game. Felt something similar when I went to honolulu for a conference after logging so many hours on Test Drive Unlimited. Edit: to make it a bit weirder still I grew up near Bamburgh Castle and will be driving past our when I head back to work after Christmas. [link] [comments]

I don't understand the consistent poor design decisions of Horizon 4 Posted: 24 Dec 2019 05:53 AM PST I'm writing this expecting to be insulted, disagreed with, and whatever else. So be it, if I really am in a tiny minority for feeling this way. I'll stick a TL;DR at the bottom. The premise of Horizon 4 is great. The car selection is great. The graphics and environment are great. Why does it fall flat on its face in executing these in the context of a video game? Probably the biggest problems the game has are the rift between what it implies to encourage, and by extension how it crumbles in longevity after the first few hours of constantly unlocking new things. The game at every relevant opportunity encourages clean driving. This game at no point implies that ramming, cutting corners, or general "arcade style" racing is the "correct" thing to do. Multiplayer has SOME penalties for colliding with walls and some prevention of player collisions, yet the vast majority of players still will take any opportunity presented to push you out of checkpoints, spin you out, rub against you or otherwise be a prick. The game neither rewards or punishes this outright, yet it's still what you have to expect from everyone and so races devolve from choosing the right tool for the job and driving skill into "let half the players wipe out on the first corner and hope I don't get rammed trying to overtake someone." It turns a race into a constant uncomfortable dance where every player is an unknown, where doing the right thing in terms of driving will get you punished by other players. If the game was made for this, designed for people to play like this, then it wouldn't be a problem, but it isn't. AI just suck. They're always braindead, the difficulty is just to decide if you want them to cheat or not. Non-adherence to physics, unfair non-random grid placement, lack of any effort to actually race or fight for position instead of just following the racing line on rails. For how "Drivatars" are toted as being representative of their players and an acceptable means of playing the game, they aren't. A PvE race by yourself should not play out the same almost every single time. This was a problem in Horizon 3. This is a problem in the main Motorsport series. There is zero excuse for this. If other players can't be trusted to play the game it was clearly intended to be played, as has been the case for YEARS now, then AI should be an appropriate alternative. They aren't. Longevity of the game crumbles because AI and multiplayer are two poor experiences for different reasons. This game is gorgeous to look at, and I love the simcade driving model. So what am I actually left to do in this game? My options for racing both suck. Playground games suck for their own reasons (too few modes, no ability for players to join a match in progress). No, just driving around the map aimlessly does not constitute an appropriate replacement for core gameplay. Lack of quality of life also deserves mention. Many mechanics and decisions here just defy common sense. Playground games as part of the seasonal events, for example. One, this is a game built around racing first, most people will be neutral toward the games existing but most don't want participation mandatory for seasonal rewards. Two, you must wait to enter the matchmaking queue at sent times, with a wait of up to five minutes to just join the queue. Three you must manually join the queue with a ten second window, easy to miss if you wanted to do something for those five minutes outside of the game. Four no guarantee you'll start with a full game. Five no way for empty spots to be filled. Being down two players is a nigh impossible win. New players can't fill those spots and players already in can't be autobalanced. Six in light of the impossible odds, if even one person decides to be stubborn and stay, the game continues for its full duration. Even if it's 6v1 everyone who wants their rewards has to wait. Playground games are a particularly egregious example of poor design and implementation, but these is the kind of poorly thought out gameplay decisions that plague the whole game. Car resets taking too long. Can't filter DLC cars out from the autoshow. Can't load any season for offline free roam. Can't do randomized business-related missions after finishing the main ones. Can't save a coupled livery/performance preset for a car. Lots and lots of minor annoyances add up. TL;DR: Horizon 4 does not commit to the game it supposedly wants to be, and suffers from poor design decisions excessively often. As a result the game is incredible to look at but average at best to play, and when the racing game market is as dried up as it is, this is unacceptable. I suppose a lack of competition breeds complacency. [link] [comments]
